Cambridge Housing Agency FAQs
- All units are one-bedroom. Maximum occupancy is two people per unit.
- Security Deposit equal to one-month's rent and first month's prorated rent is due at move-in. The security deposit may be divided into 2-3 monthly payments if needed.
- Pet Deposit of $300 is required for most pets. A maximum of 2 pets are allowed, only one of which may be a cat or dog. For instance, you may have a hamster and a dog, but you may not have a cat and a dog, two cats, or two dogs.
- Maximum Income Limits per HUD, as of 4/1/2025, for Public Housing and Section 8 units is $46,035 for one person and $52,950 for two people.
- As of 1/1/2025, the maximum rent for public housing units is $567 per month and for Section 8/Project Based Voucher units is $603 per month. Maximum rent for Section 8/Project Based Voucher units will increase to $633 per month on 3/1/2025. Maximum rent means that you may pay less than that amount depending upon your income, but you will not pay more than the maximum rent.
- Rent is generally based off 30% of your gross income. Medical deductions may be taken for elderly and disabled.
- Utilities are included. Tenants are responsible for television/cable, telephone, and internet.
Once your application has been processed and it is determined that you meet the eligibility requirements for assistance, your place on the waiting list will be confirmed. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee when a unit will be available but expect to wait anywhere from several weeks to several months.
When you are close to the top of the waiting list, you will be contacted for an interview. The initial interview process takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour and will include questions regarding the applicant's income, assets, and eligible deductions. All income, asset, and deduction information will be verified by Cambridge Housing Agency. The agency will also check criminal history and rental references.
When an applicant reaches the top of the waiting list, they will be offered a unit. They have 14 days to accept the unit. A security deposit (equal to one month's rent) and the first month's prorated rent must be paid at move-in. Additionally, a pet deposit of $300 is required if the applicant has a pet. The security deposit and pet deposit may be divided into monthly payments if needed. All utilities are included.
